The  floor mosaic of the Cathedral of Otranto,  unique in  its genre, constituted by coloured tesserae of hard local limestone,  was made in the XII century by a Basilian monk Pantaleone   who lived in the monastery of St. Nicola of Casole, an important cultural centre of the time.

In the central nave around the roots of the tree of  life  human and animal figures are developed  representing images with allegorical meanings.

Among the branches of this wide tree of  Good and  Evil  various scenes are  painted:

the stories of Adam and Eve

... the representations of the twelve months of the year  with  the relative signs of the zodiac

... of Cain and of Abel
